You’re looking at a rig that’ll handle a 325mm bore to about 450 meters, or you can push a 138mm hole down to 550 with the right pipes, and we’ve shipped these to guys drilling for water in the US plains and for geothermal loops in northern Europe — it’s a solid middle-of-the-road machine for when you don’t want to jump to a 600-ton class unit but still need real grunt.

The Yuchai 92Kw engine drives a hydraulic system that puts out 10 to 11 thousand N.m of torque across that 30-150 rpm range, and with the power head stroking 6.6 meters you’re not stopping to trip pipe every few feet, which is nicer on the crew than you’d think given the 9.2-ton weight on tracks that only do 2.5 km/h — pretty much a work truck speed, but it climbs a 30-degree grade just fine.

We’ve run these on shallow artesian wells and on a few deeper 300-meter residential jobs where the rock was slate, and the dual-purpose bit — switching between water flush and air hammer — works best when you’ve got at least 18 m³/min of compressor feed behind it; honestly, if you’re trying to steam-clean a hole in heavy clay, you’ll wish you had a mud pump instead, since air consumption numbers (18 to 36 cubes per minute) assume decent formation permeability.

Anyway, most buyers go with the 76 or 89mm pipe for the 450-550 meter range, and the 36-ton pullback is enough to free a stuck string in most cases — just don’t expect it to handle 114mm pipe all teh way to depth without watching your weight like a hawk.
