What it does is use a lever-operated screw mechanism, which gives you a pretty solid mechancial advantage and saves a lot of labor compared to hydraulic systems, though I'd say rough handling can wear the threads faster than you'd expect—keep the threads greased and it'll last the full year warranty or so.
The spec range runs from 1.5 up to 20 tons, so if you're ordering for different jobs, you can mix capacities in one order; we usually have stock on teh 10-ton and 15-ton models, but the >20t variant might need about 20 days or so lead time depending on batch size.
