Food-grade silicone was the deciding factor — most of the automatic balls out there use cheaper ABS plastic that can crack or leach, and we've had returns on that before, so this is a safer bet especially for aggressive chewers under 10 pounds or so.
What it does is roll and bounce unpredictably, basically triggering the prey drive without you having to throw it constantly, and the 42mm diameter means it won't get stuck under furniture as often as those larger 60mm balls (usually 2-3 inches clearance needed).
USB rechargeable is convenient but teh real win is battery life — we tested one unit and got roughly 45 minutes on a full charge, which is better than the 30-minute average we see in this price bracket, though it's not designed for marathon sessions anyway.
CE and RoHS certified, so compliance paperwork is straightforward, and it ships in a standdard box with just the ball and USB cable — no weird proprietary charger to track down later, which is a problem with some of the off-brand smart toys.
Also, most buyers go with the blue over red because of that it shows dirt less and seems to hold up better to outdoor use, though we usually have both colors in stock unless it's their first order.
