Actually, we've got a lot of European retailers who pick this up for their holiday gift sets or small boutique toy shops, and they usually tell me the same thing—it's the size that wins parents over, since it fits right in a child's palm without being a choking hazard for teh 8+ crowd, though I'd never recommend it for toddlers no matter how cute it looks.
Premium beech is what we use, so it's denser than pine and resists denting better than most softwoods, and the dimnesions are 2 by 4 by 3.5 centimeters—that's roughly the size of a large thumb—plus every single piece passes EN71, CE, and ASTM, which is the standdard you'd expect for any serious European or US market, and we batch-test for lead and phthalates (usually 2-4 weeks turnaround on the COA).
What it does is encourage fine motor control and spatial reasoning during play, but the real selling point for the gift trade is the European-American styling—those clean lines and natural wood grain mean it doesn't look like a cheap plastic knockoff, and I've seen it used as a table scatter for woodland-themed birthday parties, though the 4.5 kg gross weight per carton means shiping costs add up if you're only ordering the MOQ of 1000 pieces.
Anyway, we keep stock on the OPP bagged units most of the year, but confirm lead time if you need more than 5000 pieces—the production window is about 20 days or so, and our company can do custom packaing if you ask ahead.
