The 13mm lens is pretty small, which might throw some people off if they're used to bigger loupes for scanning large rock surfaces, but for a 10X magnifier you're basically trading field of view for that extra detail and it works well enough for close-up grain inspection on coins or small mineral fragments.

What it does is give you a clean, sharp image without the rainbow fringing you'd get form cheap plastic lenses — the achromatic optical glass handles that pretty well, and the working distance is about 23mm so you're not jamming the lens into the sample, which matters when you're trying to avoid scratching a coin's surfce.

Teh folding metal handle is actually sturdier than most of folding types I've handled, and the whole thing fits in a shirt pocket easily enough, but don't expect it to hold up if you drop it on concrete from any height (the glass is glass after all, and the 13mm diameter is fragile if you land on the edge).

We ordered the HB brand model 0801AA specifically because the achromatic lens is better than the single-element magnifiers for this price point, and the 10X magnification is the sweet spot for checking mint marks or tiny inclusions without needing a microscope, though for large-area scanning of a whole hand sample you'd want a lower power.
