You can use either. The receiver has a slot for a lithium pack or 2 AA alkaline batteries. Lithium gives up to 16 hours, while AA will still get you around 10-12 hours depending on brand.
It ships in a portable aluminum case custom-fitted for the transmitter, receivers, chargers, and cables. The case is included in the package, so you can grab it and go to events without extra packing.
