China Responds to US' Measures Against Chinese Ships and Diplomat's Remarks

On April 18, in response to the US' announcement of imposing additional fees on ships built or operated by China that dock at US ports, a spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry stated at a regular press conference that such measures harm both others and oneself.

"We have repeatedly stated our position on relevant issues before," the spokesperson reiterated. Measures such as imposing port fees and additional tariffs on cargo handling equipment harm both others and oneself. They not only drive up global shipping costs and disrupt the stability of the global production and supply chain but also increase inflationary pressures in the US, harming the interests of US consumers and businesses. Ultimately, they cannot revitalize the US shipbuilding industry.

"We urge the US to respect facts and multilateral rules and immediately stop such wrong practices. China will take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," the spokesperson said.

Another question was raised regarding the new US ambassador to Japan's statement that the US and Japan need to work together and coordinate their defense forces to "counter countries like China".

"I haven't seen the news you mentioned. But I'd like to point out that the duty of diplomats should be to promote friendship between countries, not to smear other countries, provoke relations, and incite confrontation," the spokesperson said.

He pointed out that China has always been a force for peace, stability, and progress in the international community. The international community can clearly see who is showing off military force everywhere, provoking confrontation, and threatening peace.
