On the 6th local time, the President of the European Commission posted on social media, reaffirming support for the President of Ukraine and for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. She stated that through the 'Re-arm Europe' plan, the EU will speed up the delivery of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.
An extraordinary EU summit was held in Brussels, Belgium, on the 6th, focusing on European defense autonomy and the Ukraine issue. Currently, there are obvious differences between the United States and Europe in their solutions to the Ukraine issue. As the United States and Europe are drifting apart, Europe emphasizes strengthening strategic autonomy while dealing with the United States. The President of the European Council previously said that he hopes all parties can make preliminary decisions in the short term to make Europe 'more autonomous, more capable, and better equipped to address current and future security challenges'. He also said, 'Europe should be ready to contribute to ensuring security guarantees for a lasting peace in Ukraine.'
The President of the European Commission is set to propose the 'Re-arm Europe' plan at this summit, aiming to mobilize 80 billion euros to build 'a safe and resilient Europe'. She stressed that this plan is not only to address the 'urgent needs' of the Ukraine crisis but also to enhance European strategic autonomy and 'end over - dependence on the United States'.
On the 6th, the President of the European Commission welcomed the President of Ukraine, who came to attend the meeting, in Brussels. She said, 'Europe is facing a clear and present danger. We must be able to defend ourselves and put Ukraine in a strong position.' The President of Ukraine once again thanked the EU for its help to Ukraine, saying, 'This shows that we are not alone.'
The President of Ukraine's goals for this meeting are very clear: to seek more weapons aid, promote Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU, and demand that Europe lead the peace - negotiation process.
However, Europe is facing a double embarrassment. On one hand, the United States' lukewarm attitude towards Ukraine's accession to NATO weakens the influence of the European agenda. On the other hand, Ukraine has both dependence on and contempt for European aid. The President of Ukraine once said that 'if the United States does not support, Ukraine will solve the problem independently', highlighting the limitations of Europe's voice.
