On February 19th, recently, a research paper published in a medical journal pointed out that some patients developed eye complications after using Ozempic (the hypoglycemic version of semaglutide) or Mounjaro (the hypoglycemic version of tirzepatide). Both drugs belong to the popular GLP - 1 drugs.

Regarding the above - mentioned content, the manufacturer of Ozempic stated that, as the research itself indicated, it could not confirm a causal relationship between drugs like semaglutide and the reported eye complications. Non - arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a very rare eye disease. According to the approved drug label, NAION is not an adverse reaction of semaglutide (including certain brand - named products).

The manufacturer analyzed the randomized controlled clinical trials of its GLP - 1 receptor agonists, including blind evaluations by ophthalmologists to confirm the diagnosis of NAION. The analysis found that the number of NAION cases diagnosed by ophthalmologists was very small, and there was no imbalance problem that was unfavorable to the GLP - 1 products.
