Philippine Vice President Faces Criminal Charges, Claims 'Early Expectation'

The Philippine National Investigation Bureau has recommended that criminal charges be filed against Vice President Sara Duterte for allegedly inciting rebellion and making serious threats.

In a statement, the Vice President responded to the news saying she had expected it. She had previously made headlines after stating during an online press conference in November 2024 that she would not worry about her safety, claiming that if anything happened to her, she would make sure to 'kill' Philippine President Bongbong Marcos, his wife Lisa, and House Speaker Martin Romualdes.

Sara Duterte is the daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. According to reports, Marcos has had a long-standing feud with the Duterte family.

The recommendation for charges follows an investigation by the National Investigation Bureau into the Vice President's use of confidential funds during her tenure as Education Secretary.

In June last year, Sara Duterte resigned from her post as Education Secretary. In January this year, she was impeached by the House of Representatives and the case has been forwarded to the Senate for trial.

The Vice President's legal team is reportedly preparing a defense against the charges, which are expected to be reviewed after the May midterm elections produce a new batch of senators.
